Red Memory — Tania Branigan

Branigan, a former Guardian correspondent in China, draws on interviews with survivors to examine how the Cultural Revolution is remembered — and not remembered — in contemporary China. The book is as interested in the mechanisms of forgetting as in the events themselves: how the Party has managed collective memory, how survivors have negotiated with official silence, and what happens to a society that cannot process its own history.
