Persian Fire — Tom Holland

Holland tells the story of the Persian Wars from both sides of the Aegean — the Achaemenid imperial project as well as the Greek city-states it sought to absorb. What emerges is less a tale of liberty versus tyranny than a confrontation between two radically different ideas of how power should be organised. The Greeks won, but Holland is careful not to let the victory obscure what they were fighting against.
