Empire — Niall Ferguson

Ferguson makes an argument rather than simply an account: that the British Empire, whatever its violence and exploitation, also transmitted institutions — common law, free trade, the English language, parliamentary government — that shaped the modern world in ways that its critics tend to discount. The book is a deliberately provocative reassessment, and readers who find the argument unconvincing will at least come away clear about what the argument is.
